Unmaking Slaves
Taking the slaves out of Egypt may have been the easy part. Now that the identity of slave had to be driven from the hearts and minds of the people, they didn't know how to live. They didn't know how to serve God or how to be a community together. But God has a plan, another gift of grace to restore their inherent dignity, to reignite their hope and humanity—the Law. Too often modern Christians misunderstand this gift of Torah and even confuse its purpose. God freed and then God directed. God delivered and then commanded them to obey—not the other way around. Instruction from the Divine was a gift for a lost and broken people to learn how to live life in the shalom of God. God’s truth is still a gift, aiding our journey of sanctification—to live life as we were intended to live.
