Judgment & Promise

The story of Noah and the Ark seems offensive to our modern sensibilities, but God's divine judgment is a necessary, coherent and gracious act. In fact, the flood is an archetype story for the gospel - at its core, it's about salvation through judgment. But in the flood story, the justice rendered was ineffective - while the earth was given a fresh start, sin carried on. A much greater storm was required. A much greater judgment was necessary. And a perfect One had to bear that judgment. Already at the beginning of the story, God knew what He would have to accomplish. So, He made a covenant - a promise so that when the people failed, He could take their just punishment and they could be saved.
