Believing Joseph

In comparison to Mary, Joseph plays a rather minor role in the stories of Jesus, but a profound one nonetheless. His soon-to-be-bride was pregnant and he knew he was not the father, so he planned to act in a lawful, honourable way and break off the engagement quietly. When an angel came with life-altering news that would set a new trajectory. Joseph was called to play a deeply disturbing and publicly embarrassing role—to be the loving husband and supportive father to a child that was not his own. His service in God’s unfolding story points us to the words Jesus would one day utter—whoever wants to become great, but must become a servant.
