Being with God

John Calvin once wrote that Jesus’ gifts for his people are not experienced by many of them. Such enjoyment can only happen through “communion with Christ.” The importance of being with God is the thread that runs through Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3. Paul prays that “Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith,” that they would “know this love” of Christ and that they would be filled with “all the fullness of God.” Sometimes our prayer life can feel like what C.S. Lewis labels “wide and shallow puddles,” but Paul shows us that there is depth to be found when we allow the life-giving waters of communion with God to wash over our inner being.
