Talking with God
Prayer can often feel like a one-sided conversation, with us doing all the talking: our needs, our thanks, our confession. But it isn’t a monologue, it's a dialogue - a conversation between us and God. Tim Keller writes that “Christian prayer is fellowship with the personal God who befriends us through speech.” But what are we to do when it feels like God isn’t speaking back to us? Luke 11:5-11 brings us back to who God is and points to this central truth: that talking with God stems out of a relationship with God. Teresa of Avila exclaimed, “for prayer is nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God.” When we come to a place of living life in relationship with God, we can talk with God in prayer about the things of life shamelessly out of a deeper trust in God’s loving purpose for us.
