The With-Us One

Isaiah foretold that "the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14) Immanuel literally means "God with us". And while the Israelites had experienced this God with us in other forms, until this moment, they were always unsure of whether God with us was a comforting or fear-inducing concept. And so, Mary was told by the angel to name The One, Jesus, meaning "God saves". This dispelled any question of whether the Christ was to be feared or bring salvation.
